| Background
to TBM
Changes within the NHS meant that hospitals
were facing new challenges. Government-driven legislation and
clinical governance were requiring hospitals to take greater
responsibility for staff back injuries and management of complications
of patient immobility such as pressure ulcers. Prior to changing
to electric beds, virtually all NHS trusts were equipped with
a manual Kings Fund bed. This bed was designed in the 1960’s
with low cost in mind and is not capable of addressing today’s
complex patient management needs.
In addition,
hospitals had lost their Crown immunity and were facing a new
wave of nurse shortages. All of these factors increased the
desire for electric beds which would greatly relieve pressure
on caregivers whilst improving patient comfort and independence.
